The first 48 hours after we drive away decides how the job wears in. Silicone that looks dry on the surface is still curing underneath for 24 to 72 hours depending on humidity. Get the glass replacement Penrith aftercare right and the seal lasts a decade. Get it wrong and we are back inside a year.
Leave the silicone alone for 24 hours
Neutral-cure silicone skins in 30 to 60 minutes and looks touch-dry. Full cure takes 24 hours in warm weather, 48 in cold or humid weather. Do not press it, poke it, wash it or trim it before then. Every fingerprint into a wet silicone bead is a future leak path.
Do not slam the door for a day
New shower screens, sliding doors and entry doors need 24 hours of gentle use before the hinges and hardware settle. That is the second rule in our glass replacement Penrith aftercare notes: no slamming, no leaning, no hanging a wet towel on the door edge. If we have replaced a splashback, keep the cooktop cool for 12 hours so the heat does not cook the silicone before it cures.
Cleaning during your first week after glass replacement Penrith aftercare
- Warm water and a microfibre cloth for the first week (no chemicals)
- After a week, standard glass cleaner is fine
- Never use abrasive scourers, steel wool or scrubbing pads
- Never use ammonia-based cleaners on tinted or coated glass
- Never spray directly on the silicone joint, wipe with the corner of a cloth
What to check in the first week
Walk past and look at the silicone line once a day. It should be smooth, evenly compressed against both surfaces, and the same colour end to end. If you see a gap, a bubble or a crack forming, ring us. Small silicone touch-ups in the first week are five minutes, ignored ones become water damage into the wall cavity.
Shower screens: the extra step nobody mentions
Give a newly installed shower screen 24 hours before its first use. If we installed on a Tuesday morning, use it Wednesday afternoon, not Tuesday night. The silicone bead at the floor and the hinge blocks needs full cure to bond properly, and hot steamy water at hour six is enough to slow the cure permanently. Once you start using it, squeegee the glass after each shower to keep the finish clear.
Sliding doors and patio doors
Move the door slowly for the first day so we can check the rollers are riding the track cleanly. If it feels stiff or scrapes at any point in its travel, ring us. Same for hinged glass doors, if the door will not sit flush when closed, the hinge is under-loaded and we can adjust it in ten minutes. See our patio door service for the standard adjustment procedure.
Storing the glass replacement Penrith aftercare paperwork
The invoice, compliance statement and warranty document should live in one place, ideally the same folder as your home or business insurance policy. If a claim comes up later (say a strata inspection or a resale), that paperwork saves hours. We keep our own copy on file and can re-issue on request. Around Penrith and St Marys we get a couple of these glass replacement Penrith aftercare re-issue requests a month, mostly at settlement time.
Something not sitting right in the first 48 hours? Ring 02 4722 2787 and we will pop back before it becomes a bigger problem.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paint over the silicone line after it cures?
Neutral-cure silicone does not accept paint properly, with most paints beading off within days. If you need a painted line at the glass edge, we can spec a paintable acrylic sealant instead of silicone for that specific location, at the quote stage.
How soon can I put back the blinds or curtains?
Same-day install of blinds is fine as long as the rail does not touch the glass. Curtain rods that swing against the glass should wait 24 hours so the silicone has time to skin fully.
What if it rains overnight after the install?
Neutral-cure silicone is rain-resistant within about 30 minutes of application. Light rain overnight is fine. Heavy driving rain in the first hour can wash silicone out of the joint, in which case we come back and re-bead. Ring if you are worried.
