Commercial glazing quotes are full of ratings: Rw for acoustic, U-value for thermal, SHGC for solar heat gain, VLT for visible light. This is a plain-English guide to what each number does, and where to spend on them.

Rw, acoustic performance

Rw is a single-number index of how well a glass assembly attenuates sound across the audible frequency range. Higher is better. Practical benchmarks:

  • Rw 27 to 30, standard single-glazed 6 mm toughened. Cuts speech but not traffic.
  • Rw 33 to 36, standard laminated 6.38 or thermal IGU. Meaningfully cuts road noise.
  • Rw 38 to 42, acoustic laminated (thicker or specialist PVB). Handles main-road traffic, moderate aircraft noise, and rail.
  • Rw 45+, laminated IGU with acoustic interlayer. Aviation noise, live music venue partitions, high-spec medical.

U-value, thermal transfer

U-value measures how much heat passes through the glazing per m² per degree of temperature difference. Lower is better.

  • U 5.6+, standard single glazed.
  • U 3.0 to 3.5, standard double glazed IGU.
  • U 1.8 to 2.4, double glazed with Low-E coating and argon fill.
  • U 1.4 or lower, triple glazed or specialist units.

For a Section J energy-code retro-fit in Western Sydney, target U 2.0 to 2.4 as the sensible commercial ceiling.

SHGC, solar heat gain coefficient

SHGC is the fraction of incoming solar radiation that becomes heat inside the space. Lower is better for cooling-dominated buildings, which is almost all commercial in Penrith.

  • SHGC 0.7+, clear untreated glass.
  • SHGC 0.4 to 0.5, clear IGU.
  • SHGC 0.2 to 0.35, Low-E coated glass.
  • SHGC 0.15 or lower, tinted or reflective coatings.

VLT, visible light transmission

How much visible light gets through. You want this high enough that the space is not gloomy, but low enough that the SHGC target is met. Trade-off with SHGC is real: aggressive solar control cuts VLT.

  • VLT 70%+, feels bright, no perceptible tint.
  • VLT 50 to 65%, standard tinted commercial glass.
  • VLT 30 to 45%, strongly tinted, feels dim under overcast conditions.

How to spec ratings for common commercial jobs

Office fit-out, west-facing frontage in Penrith

Double glazed IGU with Low-E, argon fill. Target U 2.0, SHGC 0.30, VLT 55%. Adds around $150 per m² vs plain IGU, pays back in cooling load over 3 to 5 years.

Medical suite, ground floor, main road

Laminated 8.38 with acoustic PVB. Target Rw 38, U 5.2. Sound performance is the deciding number, not thermal.

Retail shopfront, indoor mall

Toughened 10 mm. No IGU, no acoustic, no Low-E. Ratings are largely irrelevant, safety and impact resistance are the deciders.

Warehouse observation windows

Laminated 6.38 with clear interlayer. Sound performance is the reason (workshop noise cutting into office), thermal is a bonus.

Where the ratings show up on your invoice

Every commercial glazing quote we send should have Rw and U-value called out per panel, with the manufacturer data sheet available on request. If your glazier cannot name the numbers per panel, they are not thinking about performance.
