Plant rooms are demanding. The equipment inside (chillers, boilers, pumps, generators) needs a stack of ventilation air. The building tenants outside need not to hear it. And the whole thing has to keep the weather out during a summer downpour. Plant room louvres are the compromise that makes it all work, and the compromise depends on three ratings.
The three ratings that decide the spec
Free area (percentage of the louvre face open to airflow). Acoustic attenuation (Rw or dB reduction across the louvre). Rain rejection (percentage of driven rain stopped at the specified wind and rain rate). Every louvre trades one against the others. There is no product that maxes all three.
Free area versus rain rejection
A blade with a deep rain drip channel and tight overlap stops rain effectively but blocks free area. A shallow blade at wide centres passes lots of air but lets driven rain right through. Most commercial plant room louvres sit at 45 to 55 percent free area, offering rain rejection to Class A or B under EN 13030 (rain penetration test).
Acoustic louvres
Standard louvre blades pass sound through the gaps almost unimpeded. Acoustic louvres are deeper (usually 200 to 300 mm blade depth) with sound-absorbing infill inside each blade. They can achieve Rw 12 to 20 dB attenuation, which is significant if the plant is noisy or the surrounding tenants are sensitive. Trade-off: free area drops to 30 to 40 percent and cost roughly doubles per square metre.
Typical plant room louvres spec by application
- Standard plant room ventilation, no acoustic requirement: 100 mm horizontal blade, 45 to 50 percent free area, Class B rain rejection
- Rooftop plant with residential above or adjacent: acoustic blade at 200 mm depth, Rw 15 dB, 35 percent free area
- Generator enclosure: acoustic blade at 300 mm depth, Rw 20 dB, 30 percent free area, weather louvre on inlet side
- Chiller condenser screen: shallow blade at 150 mm centres, 55 percent free area, no acoustic treatment
- Basement carpark exhaust: high free area, Class C rain rejection acceptable, mechanical exhaust does the work
Where the spec goes wrong
Two common failures. First, an architect specs a louvre for aesthetics only and the mechanical engineer discovers the free area is half what the equipment needs. The equipment runs hot and cycles more, energy bills climb. Second, a spec calls for a decorative louvre in an acoustically sensitive location, and the tenants below file a noise complaint within a month.
Getting the coordination right
On any commercial job with plant room louvres, we sit down with the mechanical engineer and the architect early. Airflow requirement in litres per second first, acoustic target Rw second, then aesthetic and rain requirements to close out. That order avoids the callback where the plant does not get its air. 6063 aluminium extrusion for the frames and blades. Powdercoat to the architect’s colour spec, typically 65 micron for external installations. Stainless 316 hardware for coastal or industrial exposure. Perforated bird mesh integrated at manufacture, not bolted on afterwards. Frequently asked questions
What is Class A rain rejection versus Class B?
Under the EN 13030 rain test, Class A stops more than 99 percent of driven rain at 13 m/s wind and 75 mm/hour rain. Class B stops more than 95 percent. Class C above 80 percent. Class D below 80. For most Australian plant rooms, Class B is acceptable and cheaper than Class A.
Can acoustic louvres be retrofitted to an existing plant room?
Yes, provided the wall opening depth accepts the deeper blade profile (typically 200 to 300 mm versus 75 to 100 mm for standard). If the opening is not deep enough, the wall structure has to be modified before the acoustic louvre can be fitted.
Do louvres need maintenance?
Annual inspection for bird nesting, insect blockage and paint film integrity. Clean the blades with a soft brush and mild detergent. Check that any operable linkages still move freely. Twenty minutes per louvre bank and it keeps working for decades.
