What to do in the first hour after a broken window in Penrith

By Panther Glass 26 May 2026

A smashed window at home or work? Here's exactly what to do in the first hour, plus when to call a Penrith glazier for same-day make-safe.

It usually happens at the worst time. A rock through the front window during the kids’ birthday party. A pane that finally gave up after a hot day in Jamisontown. A break-in at 2am that wakes the whole street. Whatever the reason, the first hour matters more than people realise. What you do in those sixty minutes can be the difference between a tidy insurance claim and a much bigger headache.

This is how we walk customers through it on the phone every week.

The short answer

Get everyone away from the glass. Photograph the damage before you touch it. Call a licensed glazier for same-day emergency glass repair. If it’s a break-in, call the police first and get an event number. Do not try to remove broken glass yourself.

Step 1: Keep people and pets clear

Toughened safety glass shatters into thousands of small pieces. Annealed glass leaves sharp daggers. Both will cut. Move children, pets and anyone barefoot to another room. If the break is at a front door or shopfront, block access until a professional arrives.

If kids ask to help sweep up, keep them out. The shards bounce further than you would think and end up in carpet, couch cushions, and the soles of slippers two days later. We have pulled glass out of dog paws more often than we would like.

Step 2: Photograph everything before you move anything

This is the step most people skip. The photos do three jobs:

  • Help your insurer process the claim without arguing.
  • Give your glazier enough detail to quote without driving out for a site visit.
  • Record evidence if there has been a break-in or vandalism.

Take wide shots, mid shots and close-ups. Capture both sides of the window if you can. Get the frame, the surrounding wall, and anything that looks like an entry point. If you can see the size of the panel against a ruler or door frame, even better.

A clear phone photo is enough. We do not need anything fancy. Send it through and we can usually quote the replacement in minutes.

Step 3: Call the right people in the right order

For a break-in or suspected forced entry, ring the police first. Get the event number and write it down. Your insurer will ask for it.

For accidental damage, ring your insurer if the claim is straightforward, or call us directly if you would rather sort out the repair first and deal with the paperwork afterwards. We work with most NSW insurers and can send through quotes, photos and damage assessments in the format they need.

For a smashed shopfront, the order changes a little. We cover the retail owner’s playbook in a separate post, but the short version is: secure the site, photograph the damage, call your insurer, then call a glazier.

Step 4: Make-safe before you make pretty

If the break has left a hole in the building, the priority is a make-safe. That means a board, a sheet of acrylic, or temporary glass to keep the weather, the wildlife and the next opportunistic visitor out. It is not the final fix. It is a holding measure that protects the inside of the property until the proper replacement is ready.

A good make-safe is solid. It does not flap in the wind. It does not let the rain in. It does not leave a frame so weakened that the rest of the glass falls in overnight. We have seen homemade boards held on with packing tape that lasted exactly until the first gust off the mountains.

Same-night make-safe is what most homeowners want from the 24/7 emergency glass team. It buys time. The replacement glass can be measured, ordered and fitted the next day or the day after.

Step 5: Decide on the replacement specification

Once the property is safe, the real conversation starts. The replacement is almost never a like-for-like job. Building codes change. Glass types improve. What was acceptable in a 1990s Cranebrook home is not always what you would put in today.

A few things we always check:

  • Is this window in a “human impact” zone under AS/NZS 2208? If yes, it needs to be safety glass.
  • Is it a wet area, like a shower or bathroom? Toughened is the standard.
  • Is it close to a doorway or stair? Laminated or toughened, not annealed.
  • What is the U-value or energy rating on the existing window? Worth matching or improving.

We will walk you through the options and quote both the budget option and the better option. No upsell pressure. Some customers want the cheapest like-for-like. Others use the moment to upgrade to laminated or double glazing. Both are valid.

What you should not do

A short list of mistakes that cost people money:

  • Do not pull broken glass out of the frame with your hands. Even with gloves, the small slivers find a way through.
  • Do not vacuum near the broken pane. The shards damage the vacuum and scratch flooring.
  • Do not tape over a cracked window and “leave it for a week”. Cracks spread. By the time you get to it, the whole sheet falls in.
  • Do not order glass from a generic online supplier. Sizing, edge work and safety compliance matter more than people think.

When to call us

You should call us straight away if any of these apply:

  • The window is at street level or any access point.
  • The crack runs the full length or diagonal across the pane.
  • There are kids, pets or elderly residents in the home.
  • The glass is in a door, a shopfront, or a wet area.
  • It is after hours and the property is not secure.

FAQ

Will my insurance cover the replacement? Most home and business policies cover accidental and malicious glass damage. We have worked with NRMA, AAMI, Allianz, CGU, QBE, Suncorp and the smaller brokers many times. We provide the documentation they ask for.

Can you attend at night? Yes. We run an after-hours emergency service for Penrith and Western Sydney. Same-night make-safe is standard. Full replacement is usually next day depending on the glass type and size.

How much does a typical broken window cost to replace? The honest answer is: it depends on the size, the glass type and whether it is on the ground floor or a tricky access location. A standard 6mm toughened pane is usually a few hundred dollars fitted. Large panels or specialty glass are more. Send a photo and we will quote it.

Do you handle the insurance paperwork? Yes, if you want us to. We can deal directly with the insurer and provide quotes, photos and reports in the format they prefer.

The most important thing is that no one gets cut. The rest is fixable.
