The single most common regret we hear on window replacements: I wish I had picked a different colour. Aluminium is a lifetime frame. The colour you sign off on today will still be on your house in twenty years, and swapping it out later means either respraying every frame or replacing them. Getting it right the first time is worth the ten minutes of extra thought.
Powder coat or anodised, the finish decision comes first
Almost every aluminium window and door we install is finished in one of two ways. Powder coating is a dry paint baked on at around 200 degrees. Anodising is an electrochemical process that oxidises the surface into a hard, integral layer coloured with dye.
Powder coat gives you thousands of colour options, including matching any brand colour palette a homeowner might want. Anodised gives you a narrower palette (natural silver, medium bronze, dark bronze, black, champagne) but the finish is part of the metal, not a coating on top of it. It cannot chip or peel.
For coastal exposure or heavy industrial areas, anodised outlasts powder coat by a decade or more. For inland Penrith the difference is smaller. Most residential clients choose powder coat for the colour freedom.
Colours that age well in Western Sydney
Three colour families work in almost any Penrith street:
Charcoal and dark grey (Dulux Monument, Precious, Basalt). Reads as premium against brick, render or timber. Hides dust and pollen better than lighter colours. Currently the most-specified colour for new builds and renovations we quote. Pairs cleanly with almost any brick colour.
Matt black (Dulux Night Sky, Interpon Ultra Matt Black). Contemporary look. Excellent against white or off-white renders and light bricks. On very hot west-facing walls, black frames can hit 65 to 70 degrees in summer, which does not damage the aluminium but can be uncomfortable to touch. Not a dealbreaker, just worth knowing.
Bronze and warm neutrals (Dulux Whitehaven, Bronte, Colorbond Woodland Grey). Softer than black or charcoal. Works well against warm-tone brick or timber-clad houses. Ages gracefully.
Colours we would think twice about: pure white on west-facing walls (shows every mark), primary reds and blues (dates fast), and glossy finishes generally (satin or matt reads more modern in 2026).
Matching existing hardware
If you are replacing some but not all windows in a home, take one existing frame off the wall, or a section of it, and bring it in. Powder coat colours drift slightly by batch and by year. We can put your existing frame next to fresh powder coat samples from our aluminium suppliers and pick the closest match, which is nearly always closer than picking from a brochure.
For commercial buildings the same rule applies but scaled up. On the Marshalls Mercedes dealership job we colour-matched new curtain wall louvres to the existing composite cladding across the whole facade so the extension read as part of the original building.
Testing the colour before you commit
For any custom colour we can order an A4 sample panel powder-coated in your chosen finish before we put the whole order into production. Hold it up in different light conditions, morning, midday, dusk, and on both sunny and cloudy days, before signing off. Colours look wildly different in retail lighting than in real daylight.
Two-tone frames
Interior and exterior can be different colours if you want. This adds around 15 percent to the frame cost but it is the right call when the outside of the house wants dark and the inside wants to match a lighter interior scheme. Common combinations we do: exterior Monument or matt black, interior white or pearl.
The finish holds up better than most people think
A quality powder coat, applied to a properly-etched extrusion, will hold colour for 15 to 20 years in Penrith. Cleaning is a hose wash twice a year plus a soft brush and warm soapy water on the frames once a year. That is it. Avoid abrasive cleaners and never pressure-wash the seals.
Where to see colours in person
We keep sample panels of the most-specified powder coat colours at our Jamisontown workshop. If you are looking at replacement windows, come by with a photo of your house or a brick sample and we can hold real finishes next to it. Details on the contact page, or browse the Windows and Doors range first for size and configuration options.
For inspiration on how colour choice reads in a commercial context, the Nepean Motor Group service reception pairs dark aluminium frames against a light rendered facade, which is the same principle that works on residential.
