Office partition glass is one of those scopes where small mistakes cost serious money. The glass itself is not that expensive. The rework, the program slippage, the unhappy tenant, the noisy meeting rooms that nobody wants to use, all of that is where the real cost lives.
This post is for project managers, shopfitters and joiners who scope and sequence partition glass on Western Sydney fit-outs. We have seen the same handful of mistakes for thirty-plus years. They are all preventable.
The short answer
The five most common partition glass mistakes are: under-spec’d glass thickness, ignoring acoustic ratings, framing too soft for the panels, doors hung without proper substrate, and measuring before the floor is finished. Get those right and the rest of the install is straightforward.
Mistake 1: 6mm glass on a 3-metre panel
Office partitions are usually 10mm or 12mm toughened. We see 6mm and 8mm specified to save money on the supply price. The result is a panel that flexes, hums in air-conditioning, and looks visibly bowed in daylight.
The right thickness for typical office partition panels:
- Up to 2.4m tall: 10mm toughened acceptable.
- 2.4m to 3.0m tall: 12mm toughened recommended.
- Over 3.0m tall: 12mm minimum, usually with intermediate bracing or shoeing.
- Acoustic-rated: laminated to 10.38 or 12.38.
When the tender wants 6mm, push back. The difference in glass cost is small. The difference in finished quality is large.
Mistake 2: ignoring acoustic ratings
Open-plan offices that decided meeting rooms need glass walls then forgot acoustic was a separate scope. The result is meeting rooms where everyone can hear the next conversation.
Typical sound rating performance:
- 10mm toughened: Rw 33 to 35
- 12mm toughened: Rw 35 to 37
- 10.38 acoustic laminated: Rw 36 to 38
- 12.38 acoustic laminated: Rw 38 to 40
- Double-glazed IGU with acoustic interlayer: Rw 42 to 48
For private offices and meeting rooms, aim for Rw 38 minimum if confidentiality matters. If the building has acoustic specifications in the lease, match them.
Acoustic glass is laminated with a specific interlayer (e.g. Vanceva or similar). It costs more per square metre. It is worth it if the partition is dividing a meeting room from an open floor.
Mistake 3: weak framing or no framing
Frameless partition systems are popular for the clean look. They depend on the floor, ceiling and side walls being structurally sound.
Things that fail:
- Suspended ceilings with no structural backing for the head channel.
- Soft floor coverings that compress under the foot channel.
- Plasterboard side walls without studs at the panel edge.
- Movement joints in the building that go through the partition line.
Before we measure for a frameless partition, we want to see:
- The floor structure (slab, not just the carpet).
- The ceiling above the suspended grid.
- The wall at each end with studs identified.
If the structure cannot hold the glass safely, we recommend either a different system (semi-framed) or remediation to the surrounding structure.
Mistake 4: poorly hung partition doors
Glass partition doors look simple. They are not. A 12mm toughened door panel weighs 30 to 50 kilograms and lives on a single set of hinges or pivots. Get the hardware wrong and the door drops within months.
Standard mistakes:
- Pivot hinges screwed into plasterboard with no stud.
- Patch fittings on the wrong side of the panel.
- No floor mark for the threshold seal.
- Door swing into another door or a desk corner.
- Magnetic latches that release on slamming.
Plan the door positioning at design stage, not at install. Confirm where the studs are. Confirm the floor finish height. Confirm the swing direction.
Mistake 5: measure before the floor is finished
The most expensive partition mistake is measuring before the final floor is laid. Carpet, vinyl, polished concrete and timber all have different finished heights. A 5mm difference in floor height means a 5mm gap at the bottom of the panel, or a panel that does not fit at all.
The right measure order:
- Framing complete.
- Side walls finished.
- Ceiling grid installed.
- Floor covering laid and trimmed.
- Then the glazier measures.
If the program will not allow this order, we measure to the finished floor level marked on a laser line. The general contractor confirms the final finish will land on that line. If it does not, the rework is theirs.
Glass types we commonly use on partitions
- Clear 10mm or 12mm toughened: most common, lowest cost, no acoustic rating.
- Acoustic laminated: meeting rooms, executive offices, confidential spaces.
- Frosted, sandblasted, printed: privacy panels, branded glass, design walls.
- Switchable smart glass: high-end fit-outs, on-demand privacy. Specialty product, longer lead time.

A note on changes mid-job
Changes happen on fit-outs. The tenant wants a meeting room moved. The architect adjusts the layout. Glass that has been ordered cannot be unordered.
Things that change easily:
- Frosting position (can be applied as film on site).
- Door swing direction (within reason).
- Hardware finish (chrome to matte black).
Things that change painfully:
- Panel dimensions after toughening.
- Acoustic rating after the order.
- Adding a door to a previously fixed panel.
The earlier the change comes, the cheaper. We update the order and the program. The contractor gets a clear picture of the cost impact in writing before approving.

FAQ
Can you replace a partition glass panel without removing the others? Usually yes. Standard partition systems are designed for individual panel replacement. Frameless systems are more involved.
Do you supply the framing or just the glass? Both. We supply complete partition systems or just the glass to suit your framing supplier.
Can I get a printed image on the glass? Yes. Digital print onto toughened glass is common for branded glass walls. Allow extra lead time and provide the artwork in high-resolution vector or 300dpi raster.
How long does a typical floor of partition glass take to install? A typical 600m2 floor with internal meeting rooms and partition walls takes 1 to 3 days for a two-installer crew, depending on panel count and door complexity.
