Air conditioner condensers are ugly. Especially when they multiply. Screening them behind a louvred panel is the standard fix. The problem is that most decorative louvres do not pass enough air for the condenser to work. Get the free area wrong on air conditioner plant louvres and the compressor cycles harder, uses more power, and dies earlier. Here is how to size the screen so the machine keeps breathing.
What the condenser actually needs
A residential split-system condenser rejects heat by drawing ambient air across its coil at 400 to 800 litres per second, depending on the unit. Commercial units and ducted systems scale up from there. That airflow needs to arrive at the coil face at the design ambient temperature. If the screen restricts the air, the intake temperature rises, and the compressor has to work harder for the same output.
Free area target for air conditioner plant louvres
Minimum 50 percent free area on the screen face. 60 percent is better. Anything below 40 percent starts choking the unit noticeably. Manufacturer spec sheets from Daikin, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu all specify minimum free area for enclosures around condensers. Ignoring the spec voids the warranty.
Clearance to the condenser
- Coil face to louvre: minimum 300 mm, 500 mm preferred
- Fan exhaust face to louvre: minimum 600 mm, 1000 mm preferred
- Top of unit to any overhead cover: minimum 500 mm, and vented
- Side clearance: minimum 200 mm on each side for service access
These are the numbers that keep the unit efficient. Cramp the clearances and the same free-area louvre still chokes the unit because the air path is compromised.
Blade selection for air conditioner plant louvres
Shallow horizontal blade at wide centres (100 mm blade, 75 mm centre) gives 55 to 60 percent free area with modest rain rejection. Perfect for a condenser screen that faces away from the prevailing wind. If the screen faces a westerly, step up to a deeper blade with better rain rejection, accepting the free area drop to around 50 percent.
Common installation mistakes we get called to fix
Screens built by non-glaziers using timber battens at 15 percent free area (looks great, aircon fails within a year). Enclosures with a solid top cover that traps heat around the fan exhaust. Screens installed too close to the condenser with no service access, so the aircon company cannot reach the coil for cleaning. All fixable, but avoidable at the spec stage.
Real-world sizing example
For a typical 7 kW ducted residential condenser, the manufacturer specifies 720 L/s minimum airflow. Working back through a screen at 50 percent free area with a face velocity of 3 m/s, we need a face area of roughly 0.5 square metres. Frequently asked questions
What is the sign my aircon is being choked by its screen?
Longer run times, higher operating temperature at the coil (if you can measure it), tripping the compressor overload in hot weather, and higher power bills. The unit will still cool, just less efficiently.
Can I use a solid fence with vertical timber slats instead of a purpose-made louvre?
Only if the slats give at least 40 percent open area and are spaced consistently. Most decorative timber screens are 20 to 30 percent open, which is too tight. Purpose-made aluminium louvres are usually a better long-term choice.
Does the screen need to be removable for aircon service?
At least one panel should be. Aircon technicians need access to the coil once a year for cleaning. A hinged or lift-out panel on one face saves the service call turning into a demolition job.
