Someone walks through a broken glass door and it becomes a lawsuit conversation, fast. The building code is clear about which glass goes where, but a lot of older doors were installed before the current rules, and a lot of homeowners do not know their door is out of code. What the standards actually say
Two standards matter. AS 1288 covers glass in buildings, where it goes and how it is installed. AS/NZS 2208 covers the safety glass itself, meaning toughened, laminated or wired. Any glass in a door leaf, side panel or fixed panel adjacent to a door has to comply with both.
Toughened glass in doors
Toughened (also called tempered) is heat-treated to be roughly four times stronger than annealed. When it does break, it shatters into small blunt granules rather than long shards. That is the reason it is the default for shower doors, frameless entry doors and internal glass doors. The catch: when it goes, it is gone. The whole panel drops out of the frame.
Laminated glass in doors
Laminated is two layers of glass around a plastic PVB interlayer. When it breaks, the cracks stay in place because the interlayer holds them. The door is still closed, the opening is still secure, the weather is still out. That is why we specify laminated for street-facing entry doors, ground-floor commercial and any door where forced entry is a plausible threat.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use annealed glass in an internal door if it is not in a wet area?
No. Any door leaf in a habitable room requires safety glass under AS 1288, regardless of wet or dry area. Annealed float in a door is a compliance failure and an insurance problem.
How can I tell if my existing door glass is toughened or annealed?
Toughened glass carries a stamp in one corner (usually within 100 mm of the edge) identifying the fabricator and the standard. Look for it with a torch at a low angle. No stamp usually means annealed, though older heritage toughened may not be stamped.
Does laminated glass block noise better than toughened?
Yes. The PVB interlayer damps sound transmission by 3 to 5 Rw compared to a single toughened pane of the same thickness. Acoustic laminated (thicker interlayer) can push a further 2 to 4 Rw.
