If you are running a commercial fit-out in NSW, glazing is one of the few trades that has to hand you certification with the invoice. This is a short guide to the standards that get quoted in every real commercial glazing job, and the sign-off documents you should be asking your glazier for.
The three standards that matter on almost every job
Every commercial glazing quote we send at Panther Glass calls these out by name, because your builder, insurer, and certifier will ask.
AS 1288, glass in buildings
The rules for what glass goes where. AS 1288 tells you the minimum thickness, whether a pane must be safety-rated, what glazing pockets are required, and how the pane must be supported. Full-height doors, low-sill windows, sloped overhead glazing, and shower screens all get called out specifically.
For our commercial glazing services, the take-away for fit-out managers is that AS 1288 governs where each grade of glass must go. When we quote toughened for one panel and laminated for another, that is not preference, that is the code.
AS/NZS 2208, safety glazing materials
The stamp. Every toughened or laminated pane you receive should carry the AS/NZS 2208 stamp etched into a corner. Once installed you can see it through the pane. If it is not there, it is not certified safety glass, and it will not pass a defects inspection.
The National Construction Code, Volume One (BCA)
The BCA is where fire ratings, energy performance, disability access and structural loads live. For commercial glazing, three sections come up most:
- Section C for fire rating on stair shafts and boundary walls.
- Section F for waterproofing on external glazing.
- Section J for energy efficiency, which is where insulated glass units and Low-E coatings get specified.
Standards that come up on specific job types
Not every job hits these, but if yours does, you will hear about them fast.
- AS 1926.1, pool safety fencing. Where a commercial premises includes a pool, the glass fence has to meet this.
- AS 4055, wind loads for housing. Relevant for shopfronts on exposed corners.
- AS 2047, windows and external glazed doors. Product testing for the unit as a whole, not just the glass.
The sign-off pack your glazier should hand over
On any commercial job of size we hand over the following as part of the final invoice. If your glazier is not offering this, ask why.
- Stamped-glass install report, photos of every pane with the AS/NZS 2208 stamp visible.
- Certificate of compliance, naming AS 1288 as the installation standard.
- Public liability certificate of currency, dated within the last 12 months.
- Manufacturer warranty documents, for insulated units, coated glass, fire-rated assemblies.

What fit-out managers can do before the glazier arrives
Two things save time on every job:
- Send drawings, not descriptions. A quick PDF of the architectural set with the glazing schedule is faster than a phone call.
- Nominate the certifier early. If the certifier wants specific brands or supplier warranties for the IGUs, we need to know before we order glass.
