Aluminium louvres are one of those products where the spec sheet decides whether the job works or does not. A blade pitch that is too tight chokes the airflow. A pitch that is too open lets rain in. A frame that is under-sized for the wind pressure hums like a didgeridoo when a westerly hits. Free area is the single most important number
Free area is the percentage of the louvre face that is open to airflow when the blades are still. For plant rooms and mechanical ventilation, aim for 45 to 55 percent minimum. For decorative screens (privacy, sun control, visual break), you can drop as low as 30 percent. Under 30 percent it stops being a louvre and starts being a wall with decorations.
Blade pitch and depth

Can louvres be operable rather than fixed?
Yes. Adjustable louvres use pivoting blades linked by a common actuator. They cost roughly 40 to 80 percent more than fixed equivalents and add maintenance touch points. Worth it for daylight control and privacy applications, less so for pure ventilation.
How do I know if a louvre needs a mesh backing?
Any external louvre facing a plant room, void or roof space needs bird mesh at minimum. Add rodent mesh if the void connects to occupied spaces. Insect mesh is normal for kitchens, plant rooms with sensitive equipment, and any louvre near food handling.
