Splashbacks crack for predictable reasons: impact from a falling object, heat stress next to a wok burner, or movement in the substrate behind it. Whatever the cause, the replacement is one of the cleaner jobs in glazing. Most kitchens are done in a day, sometimes a morning.
The visit is the most important step
We come out and measure. Not estimate, measure. Cabinet edges, power points, range hood cutouts, exhaust fan, tap fittings. A splashback that is 2 mm out top to bottom looks wrong forever, so the template is the bit that takes the most care.
Colour choice and back-painting
Toughened glass on the wall, painted on the reverse face. The colour stays inside the glass, never scratches, never fades, easy to wipe. We can match a Dulux or Taubmans code, pull a metallic, or do a printed image behind the glass for feature kitchens.
Cutting and tempering
Once tempered, glass cannot be cut. Every hole, edge profile and corner has to be in the template before heat-treating. We cut to the template at our workshop, do the holes for power points and switches on the same panel, polish the edges and book the install.
Install day
Old splashback comes off. Wall is cleaned, primed where needed. Neutral-cure silicone goes on the back of the new panel, panel goes up, levelled, taped in place. Cure overnight, tape off in the morning, kitchen looks brand new. Most jobs are 90 minutes to three hours on site.
What about acrylic or tiled splashbacks?
Acrylic discolours, tiles grout-stain. Glass is the only splashback we recommend for behind a cooktop. Building code requires non-combustible material there, and glass meets it cleanly.
