Frameless shower screens, why measurement matters more than the glass

3 March 2026 4 min read

A frameless shower screen is 10 mm of toughened glass and a few hinges. The trick is in the template. Here is what we check before any glass gets cut.

Frameless shower screens are one of the most popular bathroom upgrades in Penrith. They make a small bathroom feel bigger, they are easy to clean, and the look is timeless. The catch: once the glass is toughened and drilled, you cannot adjust anything. So the template has to be perfect.

Walls are never plumb

Renovation tiles, original tiles, double-brick walls, stud walls. None of them are perfectly square or perfectly plumb. We bring a long level, measure plumb top and bottom both sides, check the floor fall, and build the template to suit. The glass is cut to fit the room, not the other way around.

Hinge load and door swing

A 10 mm toughened glass door is heavy. Hinges have to be specified for the door size and rated for the load. We use Polaris or equivalent hinges for residential, with stainless internal pivots. Wrong hinge and the door starts to drop within months.

Sealing and clearances

The gap between the door and the fixed panel matters. Too tight and the door drags. Too loose and water comes through. We aim for 3 to 5 mm with a clear PVC seal on the strike side, and a wipe seal at the bottom for floor-mounted doors. No silicone visible from the outside.

Glass options

  • Clear 10 mm toughened: standard, looks great in a tiled bathroom
  • Low-iron toughened: no green tint at the edge, premium look for white tiles
  • Frosted or fluted: privacy in shared bathrooms
  • Etched panels: for a feature wall behind the shower head

Lead time and install

From template to install is usually one to two weeks depending on glass spec. Install day is typically 90 minutes to three hours on site. We bring our own protective floor covering for tiled bathrooms and clean up the silicone trim line before leaving.
